A debris box dumpster is typically used to contain the waste materials that remain after a construction project has been completed. These projects include commercial and residential projects, and may range from basic remodeling to complete building construction. Debris box are also available in several standard sizes and are usually designed to contain specific materials as indicated by the following categories:

  • General
  • Green waste
  • Specialty
  • Nonstandard

The dimensions of debris boxes are typically measured in feet, while their volume is measured in cubic yards. This convention may require you to convert between cubic feet and cubic yards. A yard is equal to three feet, so a cubic yard is equal to 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 cubic feet. Common capacities for debris boxes include 10, 20, 30 and 40 cubic yards.

A specialty debris box can only contain one type of material, typically concrete, wood or metal. A concrete-only box, or clean box, cannot contain other materials that commonly accompany concrete, such as dirt, wire or rebar. A wood-only box can contain plywood, wood pallets and scrap lumber, but not treated or painted wood. A metal-only box may contain any type of metal.

Nonstandard Materials

Some debris boxes are intended to hold a specific type of nonstandard item and may cost more than the other types. These items may include furniture with springs, such as box brings, mattresses and couches. Tires may also need to be stored in a debris box specifically designed for this purpose.

A general debris box, also known as a mixed construction debris box, can contain a range of materials, including general construction materials, metal, plastic and wood. It may also contain appliances, furniture and yard waste. A general debris box typically cannot contain concrete, dirt or hazardous materials.

Green Waste Box

A green waste box may contain loose plant materials such as leaves, mulch and wood chips. It may also contain small branches with a diameter of no more than two inches. This type of debris box typically cannot contain dirt or sod.
